Yarn blends with natural fibers
Blends with Ramie, Tencel, Linen, or Hemp
Ramie is the Malay name for a tropical nettle plant without stinging hairs native to East Asia. With a lifespan of 8–10 years, it can be harvested three times a year on average. The fiber yield is four to five times higher than that of cotton on the same area of land, with significantly lower water consumption. Ramie consists of pure cellulose, is white and shiny, and has a tensile strength similar to silk.
Tencel is produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG and is their brand name for the material Lyocell. Lyocell is a regenerated fiber that is 100% biodegradable in a short period of time. To produce it, wood (in this case eucalyptus) is chopped into small pieces and softened in water. The cellulose is extracted by adding the non-toxic solvent NMMO. The NMMO is then filtered out of the water almost completely and reused for subsequent production processes. The EU has awarded this process the "European Award for the Environment." Tencel fibers can absorb a lot of moisture and wick it away from the body. This prevents bacteria and odors from forming. The smooth, cool surface feels wonderful on the skin and is comparable to silk in terms of comfort and shine. At the end of its life cycle, this fiber biodegrades back into its original products without leaving any harmful residues.
